The Belarus transit visa issue was a critical issue for many fans, that plan to visit Minsk and other cities. As well as taking a flight or a train, including Free Trains between Kaliningrad and Moscow.
Today a new agreement between Russia and Belarus was signed: a temporary agreement on mutual visa recognition for the upcoming large sports events. It means, that World Cup FanID can be used to cross Belarus border.
Still to find an official text of the agreement, but I believe that the Belarus Transit Puzzle is finally solved.
According to the latest news, a new agreement between Russia and Belarus will be signed in Q1 2018. A mutual recognition of visas was discussed. If that really happens, then you probably will be able to travel to Kaliningrad via Minsk with only one visa, Belarus or Russian one. No details published yet, no idea how it will affect Football Fans, Fan IDs and free trains for the FIFA World Cup. But let’s hope for the best and wait for good news to come. Belarus is an interesting tourist destination. Also, this will allow a lot of additional possible flight, train or bus connections.

Good News Everyone! Russian ministry of foreign affairs is working on a new type of Russian Visa that will allow to visit Kaliningrad for 10 days. It was mentioned by Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia during his meeting with the local government.
So what do we know about this free Visa to Kaliningrad so far:
- It should be free
- valid for 10 days
- only for visiting Kaliningrad Region
- single entry
- new type is called “electronic visa”… should require less paper work
- probably it will be “issued” right at the border. Let’s hope that all border-crossing offices will work this way.
- Minister has mentioned that it will make easier to travel for Kaliningrad citizens and their neighbors… That leaves the question open – who will be able to use this offer? Our friends from Poland and Lithuania only? EU citizens? Or everyone is welcomed?
Update: During another event a “list of countries” was mentioned. Last time countries of Shengen Agreement, UK and Japan was in that list. Let hope a new one will be longer.
Let’s keep waiting for the official details and the date when it will be available. Stay tuned!
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Representation in Kaliningrad just issued the statement that 72-hour Russian visas for short stay in Kaliningrad are going to be canceled from January 1 2017. That was an experiment that was continued in 2016, but now they decided to stop it.
It was a popular way for the tourist to visit our region because it was possible to get that short-stay Russian visa right at the border for some extra fee and paper work.
So starting from the next year you will need to get a regular Russian Visa to visit Kaliningrad. That was the most popular option before.
Kaliningrad Guide Blog will continue to follow the story and inform you af any changes to come.
At least we are waiting for the information about new special visa-free passes for football fans for FIFA Footbal World Cup 2018 and Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia.
